Beer Review: Jai Alai IPA from Cigar City Brewing

by Jay Morris

A friend of mine keeps raving about Cigar City brewing in Tampa. I had never had a chance to try it, until recently when I found Jai Alai IPA at a local store. First I need to note that it does come in a can, not a problem for me, but can be for others. I also have to not the writing on the can is in yellow, and really hard to read. After some serious focusing, I made out that this IPA was made as a tribute to "the Merry game" of Jai Alai (interesting the ball in that game travels at 188 mph) that used to be played in Tampa.

I really haven't met an IPA I didn't like, but Jai Alai IPA (ABV 7.5% IBU 70) is a ordinary instead of the standout IPA my friend made it out to be. Copper color or maybe even more burnt orange, a nice little hint of caramel early, with a nice hoppy bite, clean finish. I have to admit my expectations might have been set way too high on this IPA by my friend. I really wish he wouldn't have built this up so high, this may have been a wholly different review without him. I don't want anyone to misconstrue what I am saying. Jai Alai is a solid IPA, if you can find you should buy it. My caveat, don't have friends tell you anything about it before you drink it.
