South Bend, IN (WKZO) – The Western Michigan men’s hockey team tied 1-1 with Northeastern but failed to advance to the finals of the Shillelagh Tournament hosted by Notre Dame after losing 1-0 in a shootout.
After a scoreless opening period, John Stevens scored eight seconds into the second period to put Northeastern on the board. Shane Berschbach scored the only goal for the Broncos on the power-play, tying the game at one, 12:08 into the third period. Justin Kovacs and Sam Mellor assisted on the Berschbach goal.
In the shootout, both teams missed their first round shots, but Dalen Hedges snuck one passed Bronco goal Frank Slubowski for the only goal either team could muster.
Slubowski made 32 saves for the Broncos (5-5-3).
The Broncos will now play the winner of Notre Dame and Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday at 4pm.
