Broncos finish Rainbow Classic 2-1 after defeating Tennessee State 65-52

by Colin Windecker

Honolulu, HI (WKZO) – In his first game back after a two-game suspension, senior Shayne Whittington recorded a double-double as the Western Michigan University basketball team defeated the Tennessee State Tigers 65 -52 in their final game of the Rainbow Classic. The Broncos finished 2-1 during the three game round-robin style tournament after picking up a win against New Mexico State on Saturday and falling to host school Hawaii on Sunday.

A season after recording 12 double-doubles, Whittington picked up right where he left off, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12. Whittington missed the first two games of the season due to a ruling from the NCAA that was made as a result of Whittington appearing in an exhibition game during his sophomore season of 2010-11 and later redshirting that same season due to injury.

WMU jumped out to 7-0 lead and never trailed and led by as much as 17 at 42-25 with 12:50 left in the game. However, the Tigers chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to just four points at 56-52 with 2:07 left but could never get any closer. The Broncos held a 10 point advantage 31-21 at halftime.

David Brown topped the scoring charts for the Broncos with 17 points but shot just 2 for 10 from downtown. Connar Tava and Austin Richie both finished in double figures with 16 and 10, respectively.

Patrick Miller had 17 points for the Tigers.

WMU hosts Alabama A&M on Sunday at University Arena. Tip-off is set for 2pm.
