Athens, OH (WKZO) – For the first time in 14 years the Western Michigan men’s basketball team has beaten the Ohio Bobcats in Athens, as the Broncos are currently all alone in first place in the Mid-American Conference after Wednesday night’s 73-63 victory at the Convocation Center.
David Brown scored a game high 23 points, while Connar Tava contributed with 18 points, six rebounds, five assistants and four steals for the Broncos (17-8, 10-3 MAC), who last won in Athens on January 22nd, 2000.
WMU trailed only once at 2-0 and led 31-26 at halftime. After the break the Broncos held a double-digit lead the majority of the half, with their biggest lead at 17.
Shayne Whittington finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds to record back-to-back double doubles. Austin Richie had 10 points and the Broncos are now 9-0 in games when Richie scores 10 or more.
Nick Kellogg scored 20 for the Bobcats (18-8, 8-5 MAC).
The Broncos have now won six games in row and eight of their last nine and are currently a half game up on Toledo for the Number #1 seed in the MAC and the West Division lead. The Broncos next play Eastern Michigan (15-10, 7-5 MAC) on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 2pm at University Arena. EMU beat WMU 56-37 earlier this season.
