Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – After a sluggish start, the Western Michigan men’s basketball team defeated the Miami (OH) RedHawks 68-57 on Saturday afternoon at University Arena and are now atop the Mid-American Conference standings.
Leading the way for the Broncos (16-8, 9-3 MAC) was Shayne Whittington, who recorded his 8th double-double of the season and 21st of his collegiate career, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Richie contributed 20 while David Brown and Connar Tava also finished in double-figures with 11 and 10, respectively.
Western Michigan led 29-23 at halftime and held a 10 point lead in the first half despite scoring only one point during the first six and half minutes of the game, before going on a 12-4 to take the lead and only squandered the lead once from that point on for a brief moment in the second half.
Western Michigan has now won five games in a row and seven of their last eight. WMU will look to make it six in a row on Wednesday night as they travel to Athens, Ohio to take on the Bobcats of Ohio University
GAME NOTES: WMU is now 8-0 in games when Austin Richie scores more than 10 points…Tava fell one rebound short of a double-double and led the Broncos with four assists…The Broncos shot 44.2% from the field (19-43) but were just 2-11 from downtown…Geovonie McKnight and Will Felder each had 12 for the RedHawks (9-14, 5-7 MAC)…The Broncos bench scored just three points after being shutout in their previous game against Akron…WMU went 28-37 from the free throw line while Miami attempted just 11 free throws, making all but two...Brown has now scored in double figures in 29 straight games dating back to last season...At 9-3 in MAC play the Broncos are tied with Toledo for the best record in the conference but hold the tie breaker over the Rockets.
