COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (WKZO) -- For the second time this season Western Michigan’s Shane Berschbach has been named National Collegiate Hockey Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his performance in helping sweep the Michigan State Spartans.
Berschbach tallied his ninth assist of the season to help seal the win in WMU’s 2-0 shutout win over the Spartans on Friday night. On Saturday he had his third three-point game of the season to help the Broncos complete the sweep. He set up Justin Kovacs’ game-winning goal in the first period, assisted on Chris Dienes’ power play goal to give WMU a 3-0 lead and then helped put the Broncos up 4-0 with his sixth goal of the season.
With his four-point weekend the senior forward pushed his season total to 17 points in just 12 games on six goals and 11 assists. Berschbach is just one point shy of tying his total from last season at 18. The Clawson, Mich., native has registered a point in each of the nine games the Broncos have scored in this season.
Berschbach and the Broncos are back in action on Friday against Northeastern to open Notre Dame’s Shillelagh Tournament at 4:35 p.m.
