SOUTH BEND, IN (WKZO) – Western Michigan earned a split in the 2013 Shillelagh Tournament with a 1-0 shutout win over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday in South Bend, Indiana.
The lone score for the Broncos came on a power play goal from Kyle Novak at 1:59 in the opening frame. Novak stuffed home a feed from Sam Mellor and Shane Bershbach for his fourth goal of the season. Berschbach tallied his 12th assist of the year on the score. Western Michigan outshot the Chargers 14-8 in the first period, and 29-24 for the game.
Frank Slubowski stopped all 24 Charger shots on the night while the Bronco penalty kill unit held Alabama-Huntsville scoreless on five power play chances. Western Michigan scored on their only power play in the game. Slubowski had to leave for 1:48 during the third period due to an equipment issue. The substitution of Lukas Hafner leaves Slubowski short of a program record eight shutouts.
Western Michigan (6-5-3/2-2-0 NCHC) resumes conference play next weekend hosting North Dakota. Game time for both Friday and Saturday is slated for 7:05 pm.
