KALAMAZOO (WQLR) – 40 years with the Central Collegiate Hockey Association are in the books as the Western Michigan hockey team prepares to open a new chapter with the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The Broncos open play with the “Border Battle” against Western Ontario Saturday at Lawson Ice Arena. While many call this an exhibition game, Head Coach Andy Murray has another explanation.

“This is an International game. This is Canada against the United States,” Murray said emphatically. “This is the most important game our team has to play on Saturday and we all have to approach it that way.”

The Broncos will take the ice with a plethora of new talent mixed with battle tested leadership to face a new conference which includes Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, St. Cloud State and North Dakota.

Among the key returners, Senior Forward Chase Balisy will serve as team captain and Junior Forwards Will Kessel and David Killip will serve as assistant captains. The trio was part of the 2012 CCHA Championship team  which brought the CCHA title back to Kalamazoo for the first time in 26 years.

“Everyone wants to focus on the players that we lost, but ultimately it’s up to your upper classmen to make the difference this season and we’ve got a solid core that’s doing that for our younger players,” Murray said.

Western Michigan hosts Western Ontario on Saturday night at 7 pm. Contact the WMU Ticket Office for ticket information at 269-387-0971.
