What Is Ash Wednesday? Posted February 22, 2012 by Kim Brixton

All the Catholic people I know resemble this picture on Ash Wednesday....

So what is Ash Wednesday?

According to the trusty source Wikipedia----

Ash Wednesday, in the calendar of Western Christianity, is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter. It is a moveable fast, falling on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter. It can occur as early as February 4 or as late as March 10.

According to the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan.[4][5] Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.[6]

This practice is common in much of Christendom, being celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and some Baptist denominations.

There were reports that he was uncooperative.  You can see the dash-cam yourself and form your own opinion.

A Lin-Derella Story Posted February 16, 2012 by Kim Brixton

Here's a story of a man named Lin.  An NBA player, who has become a household name.

Jeremy Lin finally got to play ball in the BIG league---but his road there was awfully bumpy.

A few years ago Jeremy Lin lead his high school basketball team in Palo Alto CA to a state championship.  He also made the first team All state squad.  Despite these credentials, he was not recruited by any school--major or minor.  So he went to Harvard, got his degree and played basketball there all four years earning first team All Ivy honors.  Still the NBA did not look his way.  Lin was not drafted.  After being part of an NBA Summer League, he did get attention from The Golden State Warriors.  They brought Lin on board only to be cut a short time later.  The Houston Rockets then picked him up and dropped him soon after.  Finally The Knicks picked him up on waivers and were about the cut him again, however the organization needed to grab deep from their bench because of injuries to a couple of key players.

February 4th was a pivotal day for Lin, he got the nod to pick up the slack for the hobbling Knicks.  He scored 25 pts, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 7 assists in a NY victory.  Since that game the Knicks are on a tear---and have won seven in a row.  Lin is also setting records...he scored 136 points in his first five starts--that's the most by any NBA player since the NBA merged with the ABA in '76.  I'm sure Lin is enjoying the ride, and the  country has been having fun witnessing his metoric rise.  The puns describing his unbelievable streak are plentiful and quite humorous.  'Lin-sane', 'Lin-tastic', 'Lin Long & Prosper.'  David Letterman even had a Top 10 list of the, well, most unfavorable Lin Puns.

What ever happens next is anybody's guess.  He could dip back into obscurity.  But we will definitely remember these catchy puns.

What is your favorite Lin Pun?

Cute Addicts Need To Watch This! Posted February 6, 2012 by Kim Brixton

FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE SUPER BOWL---

THE ANIMAL PLANET'S PUPPY BOWL IS SOMETHING YOU CAN'T MISS!!

Did You Watch The Halftime Show? Posted February 6, 2012 by Kim Brixton

In the very first Super Bowl halftime show, played at the Los Angeles Coliseum, you had the marching bands from Grambling and the University of Arizona, along with the Anaheim High School Drill Team (who unfortunately did not get stuck on the highway coming from Orange County) and trumpeter Al Hirt, who was the part-owner of a brand new NFL franchise that was about to take the field in New Orleans.

In later Super Bowls that were actually held in New Orleans, the Super Bowl halfime shows included the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Carol Channing. Channing, in fact, must have been a friend of Pete Rozelle, because she made two appearances in Super Bowl halftime shows.

At Super Bowl V in Miami, the Southeast Missouri State marching band performed. Five years later, also in Miami, the special guest was the revue "Up With People," which made a return appearance at Super Bowls XIV, XVI and XX, after which Rozelle mercifully retired them from Super Bowl halftime shows.

Chubby Checker made an appearance at the Super Bowl XXII halftime show in San Diego.  At Super Bowl XXIII in Miami there were some Elvis impersonators.

The Super Bowl halftime shows took a big step forward with Super Bowl #25....with the New Kids on the Block. In the next few years, Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson and Clint Black performed, and all of a sudden, the Super Bowl halftime show became more than something that took place while fans went to to the concession stands or announcer showed first-half highlights.

At Tampa in 2001, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly constituted the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show, with U2 taking the stage in New Orleans the next year.

Other big names that 'rocked out' during The Superbowl Halftime segment include: Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, The Who & The Black Eyed Peas.

And finally.....

Who can forget the 'Wardrobe Malfunction'? It made Justin Timberlake a household name, while Janet Jackson was shamed and shunned.
