6 ways to burn more calories at the gym! Posted March 2, 2012 by Phil O'Reilly

I've lost 20 pounds!!! Woohoo!!!!

Who doesn't want to get a better workout in less time? Here are six ways to burn more calories the next time you hit the gym.

1. Do a few extra sets: One minute of push-ups burns eight calories and one minute of crunches also burns eight calories. Complete three extra sets of each and that's 48 extra calories burned.

2. Do five extra minutes of cardio: You'll burn an extra 56 calories on the elliptical, 52 calories on the bike, 34 calories in your cardio class, 49 calories on the treadmill, and 30 calories in the pool when you hang on for an extra five minutes.

3. Pick up your pace: When running for 30 minutes, you can burn 216 calories moving at 5 mph (12 minutes per mile) or you can increase your speed slightly to 6 mph (10 minutes per mile) and burn 270 calories. That's quite a difference that really adds up over time.

4. Pump up the incline: You know that you'll burn 270 calories after 30 minutes while running at a pace of 10 minutes per mile, but if you pump up the incline to five percent, you'll burn 363 calories!

5. Crawl in the pool: Doing freestyle for 30 minutes burns 297 calories, while the breaststroke burns slightly less at 270.

6. Get your yoga on: After a 60-minute Pilates class, you'll have burned 144 calories. Go for a more vigorous yoga class instead and you'll burn 269 calories.

20 pounds! Posted February 27, 2012 by Phil O'Reilly

Fit to win is almost 4 weeks in and I've lost 20 pounds!  Thank you Jeff Bolton, my trainer at the Battle Creek "Y" for all your support and guidence to help me make this happen. Remember to drink your water today!  One gallon!!!

As Brad Paisley would say "Water"! Posted February 10, 2012 by Phil O'Reilly

Wow, I'm still sore from Monday's workout, but it's a GOOD sore!  Jeff said I would feel it for a few days.  This is AWESOME! I'm down a couple more pounds.  It's slow, but I know I'm gaining muscle weight and my clothes fit better.  The biggest challenge is the gallon of water a day, but I'm making it happen!  Our next team meeting with Jeff at the "Y" will be Monday along with team members Ashley and Petra!  Look for a group photo coming soon!

Sore, but worth it! Posted February 8, 2012 by Phil O'Reilly

Well, I asked trainer Jeff on Monday if I should work some of the weight machines every other day.  After Monday's workout he laughed and said, "No you will be pretty sore for days....just cardio my friend!"  I was fine yesterday and I'm like what is HE talking about.  Well, I"m sore today instead! LOL  Never question your trainer!  Cardio this week.  Body fat percentage is coming down, muscle weight increase, but clothes fit better!

Meeting #2 with Jeff Bolton Posted February 1, 2012 by Phil O'Reilly

I met with Jeff for another training session at the Battle Creek Y.  Yes, I worked a little harder today.  Got some great cardio in and worked on upper body and chest.  I had to sit on that big ball and do crunches.  I'm sure that was entertaining for folks!  Seriously, I feel great on week number 2 of "Fit To Win".  Look for more video tips coming from Jeff.  Now, as far as pounds, I only lost 2, BUT, I can actually get away with 32 jeans!  A little snug, but I am fitting into some clothes I haven't been able to in a while in just ONE week!

Met with my trainer! Posted January 26, 2012 by Phil O'Reilly

I have done fitnexx programs in the past and I've worked with personal trainers, but I have NEVER been more excited and encouraged as I am today about becoming healthy.  Jeff at the Y in Battle Creek informed me he was featured as one of the trainers on the Biggest Loser show a few seasons back!  I have some major changes to make in diet and that could be my biggest challenge.  I have to learn to drink water!  I have to finally ditch the soda.  If I can do that, I feel I can do ANYTHING!  I need to drink a gallon of water a day!  We met one of our contestants, Ashley of Battle Creek as well yesterday.  Ashley is a proud new mom and wants to tone up and she is just as committed as I am in achieving her health goals!  Petra will also be checking in from our team with Jeff too!  Keep checking back here for updates!
