The Detroit Tigers are enjoying another successful season, with hopes high and dreams abounding...but for smaller markets, having a minor league team is a badge of honor...enter the Northwoods League, which announced earlier this year that Kalamazoo would be getting an expansion team in the league for the 2014 season. Alllllrrrright! Soon we will hear "play ball" in the air around here...and this league appears to have its act together...so we can only hope that this is the beginning of a long positive relationship! Now to the important stuff...what the nickname should be. The obvious is the Kalamazoo Brewers, given the number and quality of beer-producing places around here....but I'm pretty sure that Bud Selig would have a royal fit over that choice...even though the man has no reason to be worried...our team's bound to be better than his anyway...and with no cheaters, either. OK...so what other names can we give this team? How about the Sharks...no explanation available...there aren't any sharks in the Kalamazoo River...just sounded cool...or the Millers...this one would honor the history of the paper industry in the area...how about the Fest...we seem to do a LOT of that around here...the one that would be interesting is the Promise...after all...Kalamazoo IS the home of the only free college program of its kind in the country...let's see...maybe the PCBs would work...although we are kinda trying to get rid of those...and we want the team to stay around...OK...maybe these aren't the greatest ideas...but the one that counts is the big one...we are getting a team in a league that has sent current Tiger Max Scherzer, former Tiger Curtis Granderson, and Tigers minor leaguer Danny Worth to the majors, amongst many others...welcome Northwoods League...it's nice to have you here!
