APPLETON, Wis. (WTAQ) - Folks in the Fox Valley may not like the first big winter storm of the season, but they're out braving the wind and blizzard conditions shoveling their way out. Plows have been hitting the major roads and highways since about 3 a.m. Wednesday, but beware of those side streets. Outagamie County Sheriff's advise you to stay home, but if you need to drive, bring a shovel and some snow clearing materials with you. They're receiving more calls about vehicles stuck on streets than in ditches. Between 3 and 11 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to 52 crashses. Authorities continue to advise slowing down, allow enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and wear your seatbelt.
Schools in the Fox Valley are for the most part closed. Appleton, Kaukauna, Neenah, Menasha, Little Chute, Oshkosh and Omro all cancelled classes for Wednesday. UW-Oshkosh have called off classes this morning until 11:30 a.m. and all day classes until 5 p.m. are cancelled at UW-Fox Valley.
