(Holland) - Holland's Finest have selected their finest.

The Holland Police Department announced today that Doug VanderKooy, a 16-year veteran of the force who spent five years as a reserve before that, was named by his peers as 2009 Holland Police Officer of the Year. Experienced in many different aspects of the force, including a stint with the West Michigan Enforcement Team, he currently serves the East Side, including the Hope College area, as a Community Policing Officer.

Over the past year, VanderKooy formed the "Racing through Education" program, raising 35 thousand dollars to build a race car, and creating educational programming to teach youth and other citizens the dangers of vehicles and speed.

VanderKooy received his honor from the department during ceremonies last week.
