UNDATED (WKZO) -- You’ve come a long way Baby! The outdated 1970’s cigarette slogan rings a little hollow many decades later. Today is Women’s Equality Day and the 90th anniversary of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote and hold office. Sandy Soifer, executive director of the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame says despite much progress, disparities remain.
According to the Census, more than half of all women workers hold lower-paying sales, clerical and service industry jobs. For every dollar earned by a man nationally, women earn about 77-cents and the average in Michigan is even worse, just 72-cents on the dollar, putting Michigan in the bottom ten. Soifer hopes commemorating the 90th anniversary of the right for women to vote raises awareness of the remaining inequities facing women today.
