UNDATED (WKZO) - The FDA says chicken feed appears to be at least one source of a salmonella outbreak in eggs that is now one of the worst in decades. Health officials say that 15-hundred people have now gotten ill from the contaminated eggs.
The two farms in Iowa that produced the contaminated eggs both obtained t heir feed from the same source, and tests show it was infected. Jaydee Hanson, with the Center for Food Safety says that’s no surprise. He says The FDA needs to be given more authority and inspectors to head off such problems.
The Michigan Dept. of Agriculture says some of those eggs were distributed in Michigan, but they haven’t been able to trace where. Local grocery chains say their eggs come from Michigan, not Iowa.
