LANSING (WTVB) - Democrats are unified as they head for their State Convention in Detroit, and they will need all the unity they can muster to overcome Rick Snyder’s big lead in the polls. What democratic voters lack is motivation?

Republicans have a lot of energy and a lot of it is pulling them to the far right as they head into their convention today at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The GOP is a party under siege by the TEA Party. Hundreds of delegates claim they are TEA partiers. In fact a member has ousted Ron Weiser, the Party Chair from his own delegate seat. Weiser will still be running the show, but he won’t have a vote.

Analysts say it’s expected to drive their candidate selection further to the extreme right, and further away from the man the voters have selected to lead the ticket, Rick Snyder, and less electable in November.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Virg Bernero has apparently had trouble finding someone who would be his running mate. Sources say three people turned him down. But he has finally found someone to say yes and will announce the name today at the Democratic Convention in Detroit. Several sources are saying that that person will be Brenda Lawrence, the long time Mayor of Southfield, who is African-American. She had been rumored for some time to be a possible pick.
