MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - Thousands of Madison area patients are being offered identity theft protection, after a doctor had a laptop stolen from her home in suburban Fitchburg.

The computer had medical records of over almost 3,300 patients from St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison and the Dean Health System. All of them had surgeries from 2001 through November 8th.

Letters were sent during the weekend to patients who might have been affected. No patients have reported any problems so far – and officials say the laptop did not have the patients’ addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, or credit card information.

Dean Health officials say the doctor put the data on her personal computer, which is against company policy. The data on Dean’s computers is protected by encryption.
