PORTAGE -- Portage School trustees have agreed unanimously to participate in the Race to the Top, but have an escape clause written into their memorandum of agreement that will allow them to bail if they don’t like the final plan. Over 700 school districts have signed on but most teachers unions have said ‘thanks but no thanks’ to the open ended list of school reforms.

The districts that sign will be helping the state become eligible for Federal competitive grant program, and the chance to get as much as $400-million Today is the deadline for the memorandums. The Department of Education will meet later on today to add up the total. The more they have, the more it may help them win one of the grants.
