KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- They are the hottest thing going in public parks. Kalamazoo County opens its Dog Park this spring at Prarieview Park, just south of Portage. They will have ten acres of open space so dogs can run leash free. The City of Kalamazoo now plans to open their own smaller Dog Park later this summer. Parks Director Frances Jewell says they will use about an acre of Fairmont Park on the City’s Northwest side.

They plan to fence it in, install some used city fire hydrants, a watering station and some other required amenities, like a pooper scooper disposal facility. Residents will need an annual pass to use it. Initial costs for the project will be about 250-thousand dollars, with more improvements to come, as the funding is raised.
