KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A prominent Kalamazoo Businessman is expected to be formally charged today for allegedly striking and killing a woman earlier this summer. Prosecutor Jeff Fink authorized the charge yesterday, after receipt of the toxicology tests from the crime lab.
Court documents claim that Steven East, the CEO of CSM Group, a construction management firm, had a blood alcohol count that was well over the legal limit, and failed a field sobriety test after the collision.
The force of the impact at Gull and Humphrey slammed Eljean Belmonte’s head into the windshield of his BMW, causing brain damage that ultimately resulted in her death a few days later.
East also sits on the Southwest Michigan First Board and several other local foundation and community boards. He is 56 and lives in Augusta. Belmonte was 61.
