KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- An 18 year old Lansing Community College student remains in a drug induced coma this morning, after falling head first off a Fraternity House balcony during a party and fracturing her skull.
Doctors hope the coma will save Jordyn Sanderson’s life and her faculties. Asst. Chief Brian Uridge says officers were just arriving at the Sigma Pi House on Fraternity Drive to issue a noise violation. They arrived just after she fell onto the pavement. He says there were balusters missing from the railing that had been removed and used as firewood.
The victim, remains in critical condition. Uridge says they will investigate to determine if criminal charges are warranted against the hosts of the party, especially if they supplied alcohol to the teen.
The City of Kalamazoo has condemned the Sigma Pi fraternity house for a number of code violations, following the fall. WMU’s Cheryl Roland says they talked to the National Sigma Pi Organization and issued a cease and desist order, shutting down the frat.
She says there could be serious sanctions depending on what their investigation reveals, and whether criminal charges are brought.
The 15 or 16 students who planned to live in the Frat house this fall are now scrambling to find new housing, after they were told to be out by the end of the day. City inspectors say the interior of the building was in pretty rough shape, and its smoke detectors and sprinkler system were non-functional.
