UNDATED (WKZO) -- There was no rain, no lightning, no hail or threat of twisters, in fact there was barely a cloud in the sky but there was a wind storm, and it has left thousands without power in west Michigan. Sustained winds of over 30 MPH and gusts over 40 blew over trees and cracked limbs, taking out power lines all over the lower part of the state.
Just over a thousand Consumers customers lost power in Kalamazoo County, over 300 in Calhoun County. Some still don’t have power. There were nearly 5,000 outages in Kent County where a falling tree limb slightly injured three young children playing in a back yard. None required hospitalization.
The wind storm turned into a fire storm in Detroit, where the wind sent power surges thru homes, sparking fires that were spread by the wind. Fire Dept. Spokesman Katrina Butler says 20 homes were destroyed. The wind is expected to calm down today.
