MARNE, MI (WKZO) -- Two bank robbers have been gunned down in Kent County after it’s believed they intentionally struck and killed a Police Officer.  Walker Police Chief Catherine Garcia Lindstrom says Officer Trevor Slot was assigned to the courts, but pitched in when duty called, and rushed out into harm’s way to deploy stop sticks, to try to blow out their tires.

He was struck by the suspect vehicle along I-96. They crashed not long after, rolling their SUV. The suspects were fleeing from a robbery at the Choice One Bank in Ravenna.  It’s likely they are the same robbers who stuck up the Chemical Bank in Moline in Allegan County twice this summer, according to investigators.

Officer Slot was 41. He leaves a wife and two young daughters behind.  He is the fourth W. Michigan Officer to die on duty in the last 6 years.

Battle Creek Det. Laverne Brann died from the blast of a shotgun, trying to question Genail Postley, who was implicated in another murder in 2005.  In 2007, Grand Rapids Police Officer Robert Kozminski was shot by Jeffrey VanVels, a drunken suspect in a domestic dispute. Kalamazoo Public Safety officer Eric Zapata was shot by a drunken Leonard Statler, who soon after, killed himself, just this spring.

Services for Officer Slot are pending.
