KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- In front of a season-hight 4,018 at Lawson Ice Arena Friday night, the Broncos took the first of a two-game series from the Ferris State Bulldogs 4-2.
Both teams started the game with a high level of intensity as the puck dropped between the #16 Ferris State Bulldogs and the #7 Western Michigan Broncos. Each goaltender came out of the crease in order to challange the shooters and made some good saves in the process. The Broncos pressured the Bulldogs late in the first and it paid off as Mike Leone netted his first goal of the season at the 14:36 mark. Ferris State didn't wait long to answer back as they scored a goal of their own from Garrett Thompson at 17:01.
The teams were hitting hard as the second period was underway but neither team could find any offense early. It wasn't until midway through the period when the Broncos found themselves on a 5 on 3 man advantage, that Dane Walters gave WMU the lead at 11:56. Once again the Bulldogs came right back tying the game 2-2 with a Travis Ouellette powerplay goal. With time winding down in the second the Broncos were on another powerplay and Dane Walters scored his second goal of the night giving WMU a 3-2 lead heading into the third.
The third period started out with a Bronco spark as Kenney Morrison gave WMU a 4-2 lead just 57 seconds into the period. Despite Western Michigan being all over Ferris State in the offensive zone they were unable to score another goal, ending the game with a 4-2 Broncos win.
The two teams face off in Game 2 Saturday night at Lawson Ice Arena. Robin Hook has the call at 6:30 on AM 590 WKZO.
