GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO) -- The young man who allegedly struck a small white car filled with a family of 6 headed back to Detroit after a church event in Grand Rapids, killing an 8-year-old girl and injuring two other children, has now been charged with a 15-year-felony.
Police say 21-year-old Byron Juarez was drunk when he ran the red light at Hall Street SW and Buchanan Avenue on Sunday, and his SUV slammed into the Toyota. Juarez has been formally charged with driving drunk causing death and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Bond was set at 750-thousand dollars.
Juarez had been ticketed just two weeks ago for driving without a license, but that didn’t keep him from getting drunk and driving again.
His passenger, Marco Coronado Augustine, who also fled the scene, was charged with resisting police.
