KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Its not the crime, it’s the getaway that usually trips up criminals, and that was the case last night when four occupants of a car fleeing the Meijer on Westnedge crashed into a tree at Burdick and Kilgore.
Just after 11PM, they had apparently shop-lifted three half-gallon bottles of gin and were on the run, and that’s when they crashed. Despite injuries, they tried to flee on foot but didn’t get far before they were apprehended.
Two passengers were injured badly enough to require hospitalization. The 37-year-old driver, a Kalamazoo resident was busted for driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of an injury accident and driving drunk, and taken to the county jail.
The 2-injured passengers are in stable condition at Bronson Hospital.Portage police are investigating the alcohol theft and may produce charges of their own.
