Kalamazoo Mayor Proposes Charter Changes

KALAMAZOO  (WKZO)  --    Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell says he wants to put charter changes on the ballot that would alter how the mayor and City Commissioners are elected but other commissioners are not so sure they can or should try to meet his timetable, or pursue the ideas at all.  The proposals for four year staggered terms, separately elected mayor and electing commissioners from wards come from a citizens committee that met in the late 1990’s.

Other commissioners say they got a heavy work load already with the  budget, the search for a new city manager and the early retirement program and all its challenges that should take priority.

Commissioner David Anderson says they should be focusing on intergovernmental reforms, if anything.  He says this is a distraction.

Commissioners will hold a work session, perhaps in December to determine if there is any interest in pursuing the charter changes.
