KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – Hammers began banging away Thursday morning at what will be the 20th Fast Built house in a 20 year stretch coordinated by the Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity agency.

This fall’s Fast Built, located on 923 Fairbanks Ave on Kalamazoo’s east side, was a dilapidated 61-year-old home that Habitat purchased from the Kalamazoo County Land Bank at the cost of $1 to re-build for a deserving family. Land Bank Chair and Kalamazoo County Treasurer Mary Balkema told WKZO the Fast Built is part of an effort to help stabilize the east side neighborhood and raise the value of the area. Watch above.

Volunteers from the Home Builders Association of Greater Kalamazoo have donated their time and labor to make this year’s Fast Built a success. HBA members will work on the home until Friday evening having all electrical, HVAC, plumbing, windows and doors, insulation, drywall, trim, painting, shingling, and landscaping completely finished. At the beginning of the project, Habitat subcontractors and volunteers had already damp proofed the basement, installed radon tubing, and repaired termite damage and brick work.

Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity President Scott Pierangeli spoke with WKZO on site of the Fast Built, watch above for comments.

Like all Habitat homes, the Fast Built house will be energy efficient and utilize the latest building innovations.
