BELDING, MI (WKZO) -- The State Fire Marshal has been asked to investigate a mid-morning Sunday fire in Belding in the 1000 block of Masonic Avenue that killed an elderly woman and injured her son.
Neighbors were first to report the smoke and flames and hear the woman, who was bedridden, calling for help. Her 41-year-old son suffered burns on his arms and hands trying to rescue her, but was forced out by the smoke.
The first fire-crew on the scene went in and pulled her out. She was rushed to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids but later died.
Her name has not been released. They do not suspect foul play, but have asked the State Fire Marshal to investigate to find the cause.
There were multiple fires in west Michigan over the weekend, in Holland, Plainfield Township and Kentwood, but everyone escaped those fires.
