BATTLE CREEK,MI (WKZO) -- Things have gone from bad to worse for a Battle Creek Police officer who now faces criminal charges after she allegedly showed up for work drunk Saturday night. It had been initially reported that Officer Jennifer Appl was discovered to be drunk before she began her shift Saturday night. Now TV-3 is reporting that she actually began her patrol in that condition. She was called back to the station and given a breathalyzer.
State Police were called and also administered their own breathalyzer test. Warrants have been authorized charging her with driving drunk and possessing a firearm while intoxicated, both misdemeanors. She could be formally charged today. Officer Appl remains on paid administrative leave.
It’s not her first issue with alcohol. She was suspended for two weeks last spring for failing to inform the department that she missed work because she was hospitalized because of alcohol.
She was also in the car with William Gensch after he smashed up her car last June. Both allegedly tested drunk. Gensch is awaiting trial for drunk driving. She was not charged.
