More Deaths Since Motorcycle Helmet Law Was Repealed

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - MIRS news reports that Medical groups and insurers are urging Governor Rick Snyder and legislators to reconsider Michigan’s Motorcycle helmet requirement, following a new University of Michigan study that shows it’s causing more deaths and injuries in Michigan. Researcher Carol Flannigan used state data taken from police reports since the law took effect last April and weeded out the cases that alcohol was also a factor. She concluded that “going topless” cost 26 motorcyclists their lives last year and resulted in injuries to 49-others that might have been avoided had they been wearing helmets. Vince Consiglio of ABATE, who lobbied lawmakers for years to lift the state’s Helmet requirement, blamed the spike on unlicensed riders, saying there were more motorcyclists on the road last year because of the mild winter and spring. Flannigan says regardless of those variables, riding without a helmet doubles your chances of death, and increases your risk of injury by 60%.
