Do Not Resuscitate Law Expanded

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Legislation that would require that do-not-resuscitate orders be recognized in Michigan nursing homes gained the support of a House committee Thursday, including a measure sponsored by State Representative Ken Kurtz of Coldwater.

The House Judiciary Committee voted unanimously for the three-bill package on the orders involving situations where individuals have legally passed away and are usually signed by people with terminal illnesses who don't want to face the trauma that repeated delivery of CPR can bring. The legislation specifically allows do-not-resuscitate orders to cover areas outside of hospitals.

Under current law, the orders are not in effect in nursing homes or mental health facilities. The package would also allow a qualified guardian to sign off on a do-not resuscitate order on behalf of a patient and would ban a guardian from signing off on a do-not-resuscitate order without visiting the patient within 14 days of executing the order. In addition, the bills would bring certain protections for guardians.
