The Tigers tried their best to cool off the A’s but Oakland last night outlasted Detroit 4-to-3 in 12-innings for their ninth straight win. The Detroit defeat to begin a 9-game road trip drops the Tiger’s record to 5-and-5. The A’s are off to a 9-and-2 start with last night’s victory coming on an opposite field solo home run by Josh Donaldson, who connected off Brayan Villarreal, who took the mound in the bottom of the 12th and struck out the first batter before Donaldson sent his 95 m.p.h fast ball over the wall in right.
Prince Fielder had 4 of Detroit’s 12 hits, including a second inning three run homer. Tiger starter Max Scherzer struck out 11 over six innings and wound up with a no-decision despite giving up just two runs and five hits.
Detroit ace Justin Verlander starts for the Tigers this afternoon at Oakland.
The White Sox were blanked last night 1-to-0 at Cleveland while the Cubs pulled out a 4-to-3 win over the Giants Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
