by

Seattle, WA (WKZO) – With a chance to sweep the Mariners and move to 5-1 during their current road trip, the Tigers offense was nonexistent on Thursday afternoon, getting shutout and ending their four game winning streak with a 2-0 loss to Seattle.

Seattle starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma and two relievers combined for the shutout and allowed just five hits to the top ranked Tiger offense. Iwakuma went six innings before being taken out with a blister.

Justin Verlander made the start for Detroit, going seven innings while striking out 12 but was credited with the loss after allowing Seattle’s only two runs with two outs in the seventh.

Game Notes: In the bottom of the third, Alex Avila threw out Endy Chavez trying to steal second to end the inning...Prince Fielder had two hits after going 0-11 with nine strikeouts in the first two games against Seattle…The Tigers hit into two double plays…Phil Coke relieved Verlander in the eighth. He pitched one inning without allowing a runner…Miguel Cabrera celebrated his 30th birthday with one hit…Tigers are back in action on Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels.
