KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) -- The City and a coalition of local advocates, neighborhood, environmental and community groups made their case last night for digging out all the contaminated soil at the Allied Paper Dump and hauling it out of here.
WMU Professors made presentations on what PCB’s do to people and unborn babies, and presented a detailed description of all the options.
Kalamazoo Utilities Director Bruce Merchant revealed that the EPA has already budgeted, upgrading their plan to include a better cap, but he says it still doesn’t remove it.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell called the EPA’s plans “stupid”, and said we won’t fall for them.
This is the early stage of a campaign that is also expected to include public rallies and some aggressive lobbying to get area congressional representatives on board.
Several hundred turned out for last night’s event.
