Jimmy Howard made 34 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and 15th of his career The victory moved Detroit to within a point of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Red Wings still have one game in hand on the Blue Jackets. Detroit now also has a two point lead on Dallas, both with 3 games remaining and is 4 points up on Phoenix.
Johan Franzen scored twice and Damien Brunner tallied a goal and an assist for the Red Wings last night. Valtteri Filppula also lit the lamp and Henrik Zetterberg had three assists in the victory. Tomorrow night, Detroit hosts the Los Angeles Kings
