City of Portage Senior Utility Rates Discontinued

PORTAGE, MI (WKZO) -- Portage residents will once again see their water and sewer bill go up this year, and seniors will be losing a discount on their utility bills after city council action this week.

City Transportation and Utilities Director Chris Barnes says they will need to raise bills just under 3% to cover their basic costs.

It means the average customer who receives city water and wastewater services will pay just under $20 more per year.

The elimination of the 10% senior discount for residents over 62 isn’t a revenue generating move. City Attorney Randall Brown says is the result of court rulings that say it’s discriminatory to charge different rates for different age groups without some indication of actual need.

3,000 seniors in Portage will lose the discount this fall, when the new rates take effect.
