It was a rainout for the Tigers last night in Detroit for the opener of their 3-game series with the Royals. No makeup date was announced. Detroit still plans to start Max Scherzer tonight against Kansas City as the Tigers try to snap their 4-game skid.
After last night’s game was cancelled, Detroit General Manager Dave Dombrowski announced that former Tiger reliever Jose Valverde is ready to resume his closer role with the team and will be called on if needed tonight. Valverde wasn’t resigned following the 2012 season but Detroit took him back earlier this month, giving him a minor league contract with no major league guarantees. To make room for Valverde, the Tigers sent Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Toledo.
Detroit also placed reliever Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation and recalled pitcher Bruce Rondon from Toledo to fill the vacant roster spot.
The White Sox game with the Indians last night in Chicago was rained out while the Cubs needed ten innings to beat the Reds 4-to-2 in Cincinnati.
