KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) -- A suspected car thief, who led police on a high speed chase across two counties on I-94, could be formally charged today.
The suspect refused to pull over after he was spotted by Van Buren County Deputies at about 4:40 a.m. near Mattawan.
The chase continued at speeds of up to 100MPH all the way into Kalamazoo County, ending abruptly when the suspect pulled his stolen Chevy Impala off the highway at Oakland drive and crashed into a fire hydrant. By that time, cars from five other police agencies had joined the chase.
TV-3 is reporting the suspect is 25-year-old James Ryan Ballard , who allegedly stole the car from Walnut Trails Apartments.
Police say the suspect jumped out of the car and fled on foot. They began getting 9-1-1 calls of a stranger running through back yards. He was eventually tracked down with a K-9 near Kilgore and captured.
The man is reportedly being held in the Van Buren County jail, but will face charges in both counties for car theft, fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest
