The Lions hope their pick in last night’s first round of the NFL draft will help fill the hole left when Kyle Vanden Bosch was released at the end of last season
Former Detroit Hall-of-Fame running back Barry Sanders made the announcement from the stage that the Lions had used their number five overall selection to nab Brigham Young defensive end Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansa
The 6-foot-5, 270 pound Ansa is a native of Ghana, a pass rush specialist who has played football for just 3 years.
But Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz and his staff coached Ansa for a week leading up to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama and became convinced his lack of experience isn’t a problem. Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher is the top pick in this year's NFL Draft. He was taken first overall by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The only Big Ten player taken in the first round was Wisconsin center Travis Frederick, drafted 31st by the Dallas Cowboys. The three day draft continues with rounds two and three today. Rounds four through seven are on Saturday.
