DETROIT (WKZO) -- A new article in Forbes Magazine says the NFL is the most lucrative sports league in the world with the average team worth over 1.17 billion dollars.
They say the Lions are one of only 5 franchises worth less than a billion and the only team in the League to lose money last year. They estimate the value of the Detroit Lions at 900-million dollars.
Executive Editor Mike Ozanian says one reason the Detroit team has seen alot of red ink is because the Lions are still making payments on Ford Field, and while they may pack the seats there every Sunday, they can’t charge what other teams can for those seats.
The article also notes that the Lions have one of the highest payrolls in the league and all that has resulted in the team losing money for the last four years running.
He says with Detroit’s bankruptcy filing, he doesn’t see the team’s value rising anytime soon.
