DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers last night took game one of their five game series at home with the Royals in a 4-to-1 victory at Comerica Park. Prince Fielder clubbed a 2-run homer in the first inning for Detroit to quickly erase a 1-to-0 Kansas City lead. Fielder’s home run was his first long ball in 3 weeks while Andy Dirks went 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Tigers, who also got rbi singles in the fifth inning from Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter. Anibal Sanchez allowed a run and 7 hits over seven-and-a-third innings to earn the win and improve to 11-and-7. Joaquin Benoit pitched a hitless ninth for his 16th save in 16 chances.
The Royals have lost three straight and slipped to third place in the American League Central, trailing the division leading Tigers by 8-and-a-half games. Second place Cleveland was idle Thursday, leaving the Indians 6-and-a-half behind Detroit. The Tigers and Royals will play a day-night doubleheader today with Justin Verlander and Jose Alvarez going to the mound for Detroit.
The Chicago White Sox fell last night 4-to-3 at Minnesota while the Cubs had the day off.
