Detroit, MI (WKZO) – Someone forgot to remind the Tigers’ offense that they had a day game on Friday. The Tigers could only muster up two hits as they were doubled up in the first game of a day/night doubleheader 2-1 by the Kansas City Royals.
Eric Hosmer hit a solo home run in the fourth and Emilio Bonifacio hit an RBI ground rule double in the seventh for the Royals only runs off Justin Verlander. Despite taking the loss, Verlander was excellent allowing just the two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over eight innings.
Ramon Santiago hit a solo home run for the Tigers in the eighth inning for their only run.
Danny Duffy got the win for KC as he held the Tigers hitless over 5 2/3 innings before Miguel Cabrera broke up the no-no with a single. Duffy struck out three and walked three while picking up his first win of the year. Greg Holland allowed a walk in the ninth but got Victor Martinez to ground into a double play to end the game and pick up his 33rd save.
Tigers and Royals return to the diamond at 7:08 for the second half of the day/night doubleheader. Jose Alvarez (1-2, 5.03 ERA) gets the ball for Detroit against Royals ace James Shields (7-8, 3.33)
