UNDATED (WKZO) -- State agriculture officials are confirming Michigan's first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in a horse this year.
The 12-year-old grade mare was never vaccinated against EEE and died as a result of the infection. The disease is transmitted to both people and animals by mosquitoes.
A puppy in Van Buren County was the only case in the state last year.
Ag. officials are warning horse owners all over S.W. Michigan to get their horses vaccinated.Kent County (WKZO) -- It’s apparently that time of the year for Mosquito borne illnesses. Health officials in Kent County say tests on randomly captured mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus, but no human cases there so far.
The Michigan Department of Health says they have 4 human cases, one each in St. Joseph, Delta, Lenawee and Isabella Counties.
They say the elimination of standing pools of water around your yard will reduce the threat of mosquitoes breeding nearby.
