DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers yesterday afternoon took the rubber game of their five game series with Kansas City, beating the Royals 6-to-3 at Comerica Park. The win boosted Detroit’s lead in the American League Central to 8-and-a-half games over the third place Royals and to 7 games over the second place Indians as Cleveland lost at Oakland. Miguel Cabrera hit his 40th home run of the season for the Tigers with a 2-run shot in the first inning and added an rbi single in the third while Max Scherzer tossed eight innings of two-run ball for the victory, upping his mark to 18-and-1 this season. Scherzer and Roger Clemens are the only pitchers since 1919 to have 18 wins in their first 19 decisions as starters.

The Tigers take the day off today before beginning a 3-game series tomorrow night in Detroit against the Twins, who lost yesterday 5-to-2 to the White Sox.

The Chicago Cubs fell 6-to-1 to the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
