LOWELL (WKZO) -- It’s been a tough year for historic bridges in Kent County. First Whites Bridge burned and now this.
Everyone who lives near the Fallasburg Bridge in Kent County hopes it didn’t suffer permanent damage after a cement truck which weighs over ten-times the posted limit for the old wooden covered bridge, went across it anyway yesterday.
They are surprised it all just didn’t collapse into the river.
The driver was apparently paying more attention to his GPS unit than the posted signs and followed the most direct route to his destination.
Engineers plan to do a thorough inspection today to determine if it’s 142 year old beams cracked or buckled and need more serious repairs.
In separate action, a committee has decided to cover the bridge with a fire retardant to protect it from the kind of deliberate fire that destroyed the Whites Covered Bridge, just a few miles away earlier this summer.
