Police officer sentenced for Branch County drunk driving accident

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A White Pigeon police officer was sentenced today in Branch County District Court after his arrest this spring in connection with a drunk driving accident. Sgt. William Burgoyne was off duty from his job in that St. Joseph County village when the car he driving rolled over along Mendon Road west of Union City on April 12th. Burgoyne earlier had pled guilty to a reduced charge of driving while impaired after facing an original count of driving while intoxicated.

Burgoyne was sentenced by Judge Brent Weigle to 93 days behind bars with fines totaling $800. However, he’ll have 63 of those days suspended if he doesn’t appear in court over the next year on any alcohol related offenses. Burgoyne’s boss was a passenger in the car and State Police said White Pigeon Police Chief Oliver Lynn Baker was also intoxicated. Both men already received suspensions from their jobs for a week off work without pay.
