Oshtemo expands their non-discrimination ordinance to add gays and lesbians

OSHTEMO (WKZO) -- It wasn’t unanimous but the Oshtemo Township Board has approved a measure that will add the LGBT community to their non-discrimination ordinance, protecting them from being denied work or housing because of their status.

Their ordinance is based on one recently approved by Kalamazoo Township, which was modeled after the one approved years ago in the City of Kalamazoo.

It would exempt religious organizations who differ in their beliefs.

Trustees heard from a Pastor and a lawyer who opposed the amendment, and from seven gay residents and business and religious leaders who supported the measure.

Trustee David Bushouse proposed a 6 month delay to give them time to see if people really are discriminating against gays in Oshtemo Township. He was the lone dissenter in the final vote. It passed 6 to 1.
