KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The City of Kalamazoo may increase the extra fee they charge folks who have their water shut off for non-payment from 10-dollars to 60-dollars.
The City memo says that will cover the actual cost of the manpower to return service to homes and businesses.
Commissioners approved the ordinance change for first reading last night. It may hit the people hardest who can least afford the extra fee, but the city is looking for every way they can to cover their bills.
They say it often has to be done after normal work hours and requires two hours of overtime for two union staff and a supervisor.
The memo doesn’t state why it takes three people to turn a valve.
The measure will be back at their January 6th meeting for final approval.
