BENZIE COUNTY (WKZO) -- Kelli Stapleton, the Battle Creek native who is charged with trying to commit suicide and kill her 14-year-old autistic daughter at the same time, has waived preliminary exam and will proceed to trial for attempted murder.
The two were found unconscious in a van on September 3rd in Benzie County after Mrs. Stapleton allegedly lit two charcoal grills and rolled up the windows.
Her efforts to be an the parent of an autistic child with violent tendencies were chronicled in her blog called “The Status Woe”.
She says she became frustrated after Isabelle’s Education program was suddenly changed at a center for severely autistic children in Portage.
It’s not unusual for defense attorneys in high profile cases to waive preliminary exam. It reduces pre-trial revelations about the prosecution’s case, making it easier to find unbiased jurors at trial.
